generative engine optimization (geo) for indian service businesses (2026): ai overviews, schema, crawlers and local

geo is mostly good seo with a few new switches. here is what google and the ai companies have actually documented, what is still guesswork, and the schema, crawler, business profile and service page setup we would start with.

this guide sits under our landing page for lead generation pillar, which covers ad pages. here we cover the pages people and ai systems find on their own.
- google says a page can appear as a supporting link in ai overviews or ai mode only if it is indexed and eligible to show a snippet, with no extra technical requirements (google search central).
- google's 2026 guide to generative ai features says search ignores llms.txt and needs no special schema for ai features (google search central).
- in the original geo study, adding citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility in generative answers by up to about 40% in the authors' test setup (arxiv).
- a google business profile can list up to 20 service areas, within about 2 hours' drive of your base (google business profile help).
what is generative engine optimization, and how is geo different from seo?
generative engine optimization means shaping content so ai systems that write answers pick it as a source. the term comes from a 2023 research paper. in practice geo keeps every seo basic, then adds three things: answers a machine can lift, evidence it can verify, and crawler and entity settings that let it read and recognise you.
the paper, by pranjal aggarwal and colleagues, was posted in november 2023 and accepted at kdd 2024 (arxiv). it tested nine ways of rewriting a source on a benchmark called geo-bench. citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics lifted visibility by up to about 40%, varying by subject, and up to 37% on perplexity.
this was a lab benchmark, not a study of google's live ai overviews, and "up to" means the best case. read it as "evidence-dense writing gets picked more", not a 40% promise.
google's own guide treats it as seo, as reported by search engine journal.
seo vs geo: what changes and what doesn't
| area | stays the same | what changes with geo |
|---|---|---|
| indexing | the page must be crawlable, indexed and snippet-eligible | other ai search crawlers also need access in robots.txt |
| content | helpful, first-hand, written for people | answers come first and make sense quoted alone |
| evidence | sources build trust | sources, dates and numbers make a passage citable |
| structured data | must match visible content | helps entities get recognised; not required for ai features |
| local | business profile and reviews drive local results | ai answers lean on the same profile and reviews for "near me" questions |
how to rank in ai overviews, ai mode and chatgpt: what is actually known?
you can't rank in ai overviews directly. you become eligible by being indexed and snippet-eligible in google, then chosen as a supporting link. google says normal seo applies and nothing special is required. chatgpt search needs openai's oai-searchbot allowed. everything beyond that is measured correlation or vendor speculation.
google's ai features page says both features may use "query fan-out", running several related searches to build one answer (google search central). a service page that also answers cost, timeline and fit has more chances to be picked. snippet controls such as nosnippet apply to ai features too.
google has announced a search console control to opt out of generative ai features; sites that opt out get no traffic from them (google). a business that wants enquiries shouldn't use it.
paid placements are separate: ads in ai overviews are live in india in english, and google announced ads in ai mode for india on 28 october 2026 (our google search ads 2026 guide). organic citations can't be bought.
what we know vs what is speculation
| claim | status | source |
|---|---|---|
| a supporting link must be indexed and snippet-eligible; no extra requirements | known, google documentation | google search central |
| no llms.txt, special schema or chunking needed for google ai features | known, google documentation | google ai optimization guide |
| blocking oai-searchbot removes you from chatgpt search answers | known, openai documentation | openai |
| citations, quotations and statistics lift visibility up to about 40% | measured in a lab benchmark | arxiv |
| about 38% of ai overview citations rank in the top 10 for the query | measured by ahrefs (march 2026), as reported | designrush |
| youtube mentions correlate most with ai brand visibility (about 0.737) | correlation, ahrefs december 2025 | ahrefs |
| llms.txt helps chatgpt, claude or perplexity cite you | speculation; no major provider has documented using it | see the llms.txt section below |
that youtube correlation is why our ad creative strategy guide suggests your best ads double as organic video.
schema markup for local business: what does google support now?
use localbusiness markup, or a more specific subtype such as professionalservice or dentist, on your contact or location page, and organization markup on the home page. keep it accurate and matching what the page shows. don't expect faq rich results anymore, and don't mark up your own reviews for stars.
structured data must match visible content, and google's ai guide says no special markup is needed for ai features (google search central). schema is hygiene: it states your name, address, hours and services so machines don't guess.
two things changed. faq rich results, limited to government and health sites since 2023, stopped appearing on 7 may 2026, as reported by coywolf. and since 2019 google hasn't shown review stars for businesses reviewing themselves (google search central blog).
| schema type | use it for | google's required properties | google rich result support |
|---|---|---|---|
| localbusiness | contact or branch page of a clinic, academy or office | name, address | yes: business details in search and maps (google) |
| professionalservice (a schema.org localbusiness subtype) | agencies, consultants, b2b services; use a narrower subtype like dentist where one exists | same as localbusiness | treated as localbusiness |
| organization | home or about page: logo, contact, sameas profiles | none required; add what applies | no card; can shape your logo and knowledge panel (google) |
| faqpage | real questions and answers on a service page | question with acceptedanswer | no: rich results stopped 7 may 2026, as reported; markup still valid |
| review or aggregaterating about yourself | star ratings for your own business | not applicable | no: self-serving reviews aren't shown |
is llms.txt worth it, and which ai crawlers should you allow?
llms.txt is a proposed markdown file that summarises your site for language models. google says search ignores it, and no major ai provider has documented using it. it is optional. your robots.txt matters far more: allow the search crawlers from openai, anthropic and perplexity, and decide separately about training crawlers.
llms.txt: what it is and whether to bother
the proposal at llmstxt.org, published by jeremy howard on 3 september 2024, suggests a /llms.txt file in markdown with a short summary of the site and links to key pages. google's guide says search ignores llms.txt and that adding one neither helps nor harms your rankings (google search central).
add one if it takes ten minutes; don't pay anyone to "optimise" it.
ai crawler access in robots.txt
each company runs separate bots for training, search and user requests, and each rule works independently. openai says opting out of oai-searchbot keeps you out of chatgpt search answers, and user-initiated chatgpt-user visits may not follow robots.txt (openai). anthropic describes claudebot, claude-searchbot and claude-user the same way (anthropic). perplexity says perplexitybot surfaces sites in its results and isn't used to train foundation models (perplexity). google-extended is a control token, not a crawler: it governs gemini training and grounding, and google says it doesn't affect inclusion or ranking in search (google).
| bot | operator | purpose | robots.txt token | our default for a service business |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| googlebot | search index, including ai overviews and ai mode | googlebot | allow | |
| google-extended | gemini training and grounding; not search | google-extended | your choice; blocking doesn't affect search | |
| oai-searchbot | openai | chatgpt search results | oai-searchbot | allow |
| gptbot | openai | model training | gptbot | your choice |
| chatgpt-user, claude-user, perplexity-user | openai, anthropic, perplexity | fetch a page when a user asks | same as bot name | allow; robots.txt may not apply |
| claude-searchbot | anthropic | search indexing for claude | claude-searchbot | allow |
| claudebot | anthropic | model training | claudebot | your choice |
| perplexitybot | perplexity | perplexity search results | perplexitybot | allow |
check your firewall or cdn too; some bot-protection settings block ai crawlers that robots.txt allows.
google business profile optimization: what should a service-area business in india set up?
google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. prominence includes your review count and rating and your position in web results. so a service-area business needs an accurate profile with a hidden address if customers don't visit, up to 20 real service areas, the right category, steady genuine reviews and a link to the matching service page.
that comes from google's help page, which also says you can't pay for a better local ranking (google business profile help). ai answers to "physiotherapy clinic in kondapur" draw on the same local data.
google allows up to 20 service areas, as cities, postal codes or areas rather than a radius, within about two hours' drive of your base (google business profile help). for marut drones we built state-specific creative and forms across 13 states; a profile claiming the whole country speaks to nobody.
google business profile checklist
- name: your real-world business name, with no city or keyword added.
- address: hide it if customers don't come to you; keep it visible for a clinic, academy or office they visit.
- service areas: up to 20 real localities or pincodes within about two hours' drive, never a radius.
- primary category: the most specific one, such as "physiotherapy clinic", not "health".
- services: the same service names as your website.
- hours and phone: correct for each day, including holidays.
- website link: points to the matching service page, with utms so leads are attributed (our conversion tracking guide).
- photos: real team, premises and work.
- reviews: ask every satisfied customer, reply to all, and never offer discounts for reviews.
- regulated claims: property posts still need rera details (our compliance checklist). this is general information, not legal advice.
service page seo: what does a page that ranks and gets cited look like?
a service page that ranks and gets cited answers one service for one audience: what it is, who it suits, what it costs, how it works, proof and next steps. each section opens with a plain answer a machine can quote, backed by a number, date or source. it is longer than an ad page, and it should be.
an ad page has one job, and our landing page design guide keeps it lean. a service page also answers the fan-out questions. don't merge them.
in our audits, pricing, process and proof often live only in a sales deck. if the page doesn't say it, no ai system can repeat it. for lodha developers, 45 flats were sold with 100% attributed to digital, which took clear pages and a crm recording every lead's source.
| section | what it answers | citation-ready element |
|---|---|---|
| opening answer | what is this service and who is it for? | a 40 to 60 word answer with the city or segment named |
| who it suits | is this right for me? | a short "good fit / not a fit" list |
| price or range | what does it cost? | a dated price range or the factors that set price |
| process | what happens after i enquire? | steps with timelines, such as "quote within 48 hours" |
| proof | can i trust you? | named results, credentials or case studies with dates |
| service area | do you serve my area? | localities listed in text, matching the business profile |
| faqs | what else do buyers ask? | real questions from sales calls, each answered in two lines |
| next step | how do i start? | one clear action: call, whatsapp or book |
if your category has no name yet, describe the buyer's problem in their words, our lesson from building think labs.
a 30-day geo plan
spend the first week on access and measurement, the second on your business profile and schema, the third on rewriting your top service pages, and the fourth on off-site proof. judge it on enquiries in your crm, not on screenshots of ai answers, because those change from one search to the next.
- days 1 to 7, access: check robots.txt and your firewall against the crawler table, confirm key pages are indexed in search console, and remove any stray nosnippet tags.
- days 1 to 7, measurement: note search console clicks for your service pages, since ai feature traffic is counted inside the web totals, and tag every enquiry's source in the crm.
- days 8 to 14, local: work through the business profile checklist, then add localbusiness or a specific subtype on the contact page and organization on the home page.
- days 15 to 21, pages: rewrite your three highest-value service pages to the template, starting each section with a quotable answer and adding a dated price range, process and proof.
- days 22 to 30, off-site: ask recent customers for reviews and publish one short video answering your most common sales question.
- day 30, review: compare enquiries by source with week one, and ask customers how they found you.
who wrote this, how and why
puneetraj chavan wrote this. he is the founder of rapchik media and has spent 8+ years running performance marketing and automation for 30+ brands across india and the us. sources were checked on 2 november 2026; platform and vendor figures were not independently audited.
ai search behaviour changes quickly, and nobody can guarantee a citation. client results are from rapchik case studies and describe marketing outcomes, not ai visibility. why: geo is often sold with promises nobody can keep, so we wanted one page that separates what the platforms document from guesswork.
