in 2026 one ad does three jobs at once: it is your targeting, your sales pitch and a compliance risk. here is the hook-proof-offer system we use to build ads for indian buyers.

  • meta's andromeda retrieval engine narrows tens of millions of candidate ads to a few thousand for each person (meta engineering, dec 2024).
  • meta said on its q2 2026 earnings call that 9 million small businesses now use at least one of its ai ad creative tools (meta q2 2026 call transcript).
  • asci's ai-labelling guidelines were released on 29 september 2026 and take effect about three months later. deepfakes and fake endorsements stay banned even when labelled.
  • rural india has about 548 million of india's 958 million active internet users (iamai and kantar via business today).
  • for marut drones, state-specific creative across 13 states helped turn ₹25 lakh of spend into ₹8.7 crore (36x roas).

why is ad creative strategy now your targeting, your pitch and your compliance risk?

because meta now leans on the ad itself to find buyers, the ad must still sell once it reaches them, and india's ad regulator now judges how it was made. interest targeting matters less every year. what you show, say and generate decides who sees the ad, whether they act and whether it breaks a rule.

targeting. meta's first ad stage, retrieval, picks a few thousand candidates out of tens of millions for each person. meta rebuilt this stage as andromeda in 2024 (meta engineering). our reading, shared by many practitioners, is that with broad audiences the ad's content signals who it is for. meta has not said this in those words. but in practice a farmer-in-a-field ad finds farmers. ten near-identical ads find the same people ten times.

pitch. being shown is not being bought. the ad must still earn belief and give a reason to act.

compliance. making variations is getting cheaper. social media today reported that on 6 october 2026 meta made static-to-video generation in advantage+ creative generally available and widened access to ads creative studio (social media today; meta's announcement). every cheap ai variation is also something asci can rule on.

what is performance creative? the hook-proof-offer system

performance creative is advertising built to drive a measurable action, such as a lead, sale or booking. every ad we make has three parts: a hook that stops the right person, proof that earns belief, and an offer that gives a reason to act now. when any one is missing, it shows up in the numbers.

we first learned how much of a product's positioning lives in the hook while marketing a one-application job-portal saas in 2019, before the category had a name (the think labs story).

partits jobif it is missing, you see
hook (first 1 to 3 seconds)stop the right person and tell the platform who the ad is forlow thumb-stop rate, irrelevant clicks
proof (the middle)make the claim believable: a demo, a customer, a numberclicks, but few leads
offer (the end)a reason to act now: price, slot, free visit, deadlineleads who never pick up the phone

write each part in one line before design starts. if you can't, the ad isn't ready.

how do video ad hooks stop the right person, not everyone?

a good hook names the viewer's situation in their own words within the first two seconds. the wrong people scroll past and the right people stay. a shocking hook that stops everyone is a bad hook. it buys attention from people who will never buy and teaches the algorithm the wrong audience.

hooks come from a few families: a problem, a result, a question, a face talking to camera, or the product doing something surprising. choose from what the buyer already worries about, not from what is trending.

put the hook on screen as text too, since many people watch with the sound off. write at least three hooks per video. hooks are the cheapest part of an ad to change, so they are the cheapest part to test.

creative testing: what makes two ads genuinely different?

two ads are genuinely different when they would appeal to different people for different reasons: a new person on screen, a new language, a new format or a new angle. changing the button colour or background music is not a new ad. near-copies tend to reach the same people, so they rarely find new buyers.

we use this table to check every batch before launch:

levergenuinely differentnot different (a near-copy)
personfarmer vs dealer vs agronomistsame actor, different shirt
languagean ad written from scratch in one regional language for its market vs another written for a different marketsame hindi script, subtitles swapped
formattalking head vs product demo vs static price cardsame video cut to 9:16 and 1:1
angle (reason to buy)saves money vs saves time vs "your neighbour already has one"same angle, new adjective
prooftestimonial vs live demo vs number on screensame testimonial, new music
offerfree visit vs festive price vs emisame offer, new font

six ads that differ on person, language and angle teach you more than twenty that differ on colour. you will also hear that "25 creatives in one ad set beat five ad sets of five". meta has not published that. treat it as a practitioner claim to test, not a rule.

is regional language marketing just translation?

no. a regional-language ad reaches a different buyer, with different crops, prices, trust signals and buying seasons. translating a head-office ad keeps the wrong examples and the wrong proof. write each language version from scratch for the reader in front of it, and give it its own budget and its own numbers.

india has about 958 million active internet users, and rural india accounts for about 548 million of them, according to the iamai and kantar internet in india 2025 report (business today). most of those users do not read ads in english.

marut drones sold across 13 states, each with its own language and context. we made state-specific creative for each one instead of a single national ad. that meant each state was judged on its own results, rather than very different audiences being averaged into one weak number. ₹25 lakh of spend generated ₹8.7 crore in revenue, a 36x roas, and 23,420 leads. the full story is in the marut drones case study.

ugc ads in india: do they still work when anyone can fake them?

yes, when the person is real and the disclosure is clear. ugc ads work because a customer's face and words act as proof. that is exactly why ai copies are risky: a synthetic "customer" that could mislead a buyer needs a label, and a fake endorsement is not allowed at all.

real creators must disclose paid or gifted posts under asci's influencer guidelines (asci). get written usage rights before you run a creator's content as an ad.

what do the asci guidelines on ai-generated ads require?

asci's guidelines say indian ads must clearly label ai-generated content when it could mislead a buyer, such as ai influencers or cloned voices and likenesses. routine edits need no label. some uses, including deepfakes without consent and fake endorsements, are not allowed even with a label. this is general information, not legal advice.

asci released its guidelines for labelling synthetically generated content in advertising on 29 september 2026 (asci pdf). the document says they take effect three months after publication. law firm khaitan & co reads that as 29 december 2026 (khaitan & co), while exchange4media reported 1 january 2027 (exchange4media). plan for late december either way.

the test is the effect on the consumer, not the tool you used. the guidelines sort ai use into three groups:

groupexampleswhat to do
no label neededroutine edits such as colour correction or lighting fixesnothing extra
label requiredai influencers, cloned voices or likenesses, and other synthetic content that could mislead a buyera clear, visible label saying ai was used
not allowed, label or notdeepfakes without consent, fake endorsements, exaggerated product featuresdon't make it

a label does not rescue a misleading ad. if the ad would break the asci code without ai, it still breaks it with a label.

these rules sit on top of meity's amendment to the it rules, notified on 10 february 2026, which requires platforms to label synthetically generated content (business today; medianama). again, this is general information, not legal advice. check the source documents or a lawyer for your specific ads.

how do you spot ad fatigue before it costs you?

ad fatigue shows up as frequency rising while click-through rate falls and cost per result climbs for the same ad over several days. the fix is rarely a new colour. replace the tired ad with one that differs on person, language or angle, and keep a pipeline of new ads so you never wait for a crisis.

we watch frequency, hook rate and cost per qualified lead every week. when two of them worsen together, the next batch goes live.

brand marketing vs performance marketing: do you have to choose?

no. performance ads convert demand that already exists. brand work builds the trust and recognition that make those ads cheaper and more believable. the useful question is not which one, but whether your brand is clear enough that a two-second hook is instantly recognisable as you.

we built the indian digital identity for versace × rosenthal, covering branding and social. consistent brand work like that is what makes paid ads believable later. on the performance side, a single meta campaign for a luxury retail client drove ₹2.1 crore in sales.

brand presence also feeds ai search. in ahrefs' december 2025 study of about 75,000 brands, youtube mentions had the strongest correlation with ai visibility, at about 0.737 (ahrefs). that is a correlation, not proof. still, it is a good reason to make your best ads work as organic video too.

the one-page creative brief we use

every batch of ads starts from one page. it forces the hook, proof and offer to be written before design, sets which levers will vary and records the compliance check. if a field is blank, the batch isn't ready. copy the table into a doc and fill in one per product or audience.

the example column below is an illustrative example for a made-up agri-drone spraying service. it is not a real client brief, and its numbers are illustrative.
