google bids on whatever you tell it a conversion is. count form fills and it buys form fillers. send qualified leads and sales back from your crm and it learns to find buyers. here is the setup, the checks and how to prove it worked.

our pillar on ai max for search campaigns in india argues that your conversion data is now your bid strategy. this guide is the how: google ads conversion tracking end to end, from which actions to create to crm imports, bidding, cost and proving the ads caused the sales.

  • primary conversion actions feed bidding and the conversions column; secondary actions only report, in all conversions (google ads help).
  • google keeps a gclid for 90 days, and imports keyed on gbraid or wbraid can take up to 72 hours to process (google ads help).
  • from 15 june 2026, offline conversion and enhanced conversions for leads uploads move to the data manager api and are blocked in the google ads api (google ads help).
  • in june 2026 google renamed "maximise conversions with a target cpa" to target cpa, and the value equivalent to target roas, with no change in behaviour (google ads help).

google ads conversion tracking should count the stages your sales team cares about, not just form fills. create one action per funnel stage, make the deepest stage that happens often enough your primary goal, keep form fills and calls as secondary, count one conversion per lead, and set the window to cover your real sales cycle.

google's definitions settle most arguments. primary actions are used for bidding when their goal is used for bidding; secondary actions are observed but never bid on, unless you put them in a custom goal (google ads help). "one" counts a single conversion per click, which google suggests for leads, and "every" counts each one, which suits sales (google ads help). windows can run from 1 to 90 days, with 30 days the default for search (google ads help). data-driven attribution is the default model for most actions (google ads help).

conversion action setup table

how we set up a lead account, as of october 2026. values are your own estimates of each stage's worth.

two traps show up in most accounts we audit: two primary actions for one event (a tag form fill plus a ga4 import of the same fill), so every lead counts twice, and a 30-day window on a business whose buyers take longer. for one real estate developer, average time-to-lead was 18 days, and the site visit and booking come later, so imported stages get the full 90.

enhanced conversions for leads: how do you set it up and check it works?

enhanced conversions for leads captures a hashed email or phone number when someone fills your form, then matches it to the outcome you later upload from your crm. switch on the account-level setting, configure the google tag to read the form fields, and check the diagnostics for match rate before you trust any bidding on it.

google now combines enhanced conversions for web and for leads into a single on/off setting, and accepts user-provided data from tags, data manager and api connections (google ads help). that is consistent with the pillar's note that google ads api v26 replaces the old leads-specific field with one account-level setting, as reported by relevant audience.

google's diagnostics grade match rate: under 5% very low, 6 to 25% low, 26 to 50% average, 51 to 100% high (google ads help). third-party guides put the upload limit at 63 days after the click, for example customerlabs. we couldn't confirm that on google's own page. upload daily and it never matters.

enhanced conversions for leads qa checklist

  • setting on: enhanced conversions switched on in the account, and the terms accepted.
  • tag reads the form: the google tag or tag manager captures email and phone from the field, not from a placeholder.
  • phone format: numbers sent in full international format with +91, not a bare 10-digit number.
  • normalised before hashing: lower-case email, no spaces, sha-256 if you hash yourself.
  • click ids kept: gclid, gbraid and wbraid saved in hidden fields and stored in the crm, as our landing page guide specifies.
  • one action per stage: qualified, site visit and sale each upload to their own conversion action.
  • diagnostics clean: no "no user-provided data matches" warning, and match rate at least average.
  • counts reconcile: uploaded conversions within a few per cent of the crm count for the same dates.

does consent mode v2 matter for an indian advertiser?

mostly not. google's eu user consent policy, which requires consent signals, covers users in the eea, the uk and switzerland (google). if you target nris in europe or the uk, you need it. for india-only traffic, the duty that matters is india's own: dpdp notice and consent duties apply from 13 may 2027, so your form's consent line should cover sharing hashed data with ad platforms. this is general information, not legal advice.

offline conversion import google ads: how do you send crm stages back?

offline conversion import in google ads sends a stage from your crm, such as qualified lead or sale, back to the click that started it. store the gclid, gbraid or wbraid with every lead, plus hashed email and phone, then upload each stage daily through data manager. google keeps the gclid for 90 days.

each uploaded row needs exactly one click identifier: gclid for most clicks, gbraid or wbraid for ios traffic, as google's own upload sample enforces. processing usually takes under 12 hours and up to 72 hours for gbraid and wbraid rows (google ads help). since 15 june 2026, new integrations upload through the data manager api, or through data manager in the google ads interface under tools.

our pmax guide explains why google wants the deepest stage that usually happens within about 7 days. a small scheduled automation can do the daily upload; the same kind of reporting automation cut our own agency ops effort by 60%+.

lodha developers' 45 flats were 100% attributed to digital because every buyer was traced to source in the crm, which is the raw material for this table.

smart bidding strategies: which one should you pick?

pick smart bidding strategies by two questions: do you have a cost or return target, and do your conversions carry real values? no target and no values: maximise conversions. a cost target: target cpa. real values, no target: maximise conversion value. real values and a return target: target roas.

google describes target cpa as getting as many conversions as possible at your target cost, target roas as needing conversion values before you can apply it, and both maximise strategies as spending your budget without a target (google ads help). the june 2026 rename brought target cpa and target roas back as standalone names; google's developer blog says behaviour is unchanged. our search ads guide notes that manual cpc limits what ai max can do.

google ads cost in india has no reliable public benchmark. google publishes no rate card, and the india cpc tables online are agency estimates without stated samples that disagree several times over. pull cpcs from your own keyword planner and account, then work out your cost per qualified lead from your conversion rates.

indian guides quote real estate cpcs anywhere from about ₹40 to ₹150, and education from ₹15 to ₹150, with no sample or date method, as one review of what data actually exists also found. us benchmark reports aren't india data, so we publish no rapchik average, for the same reason our facebook ads cost guide doesn't.

halve the conversion rate and cost per lead doubles at the same cpc. set target cpa from your cost per qualified lead, not from a figure in a deck. industry context is in google ads for business in india.

conversion lift google ads: can you prove the ads caused the sales?

conversion lift in google ads holds back a group from seeing your ads and compares its conversions with the exposed group. since october 2026 it covers search and performance max, for accounts with at least 1,000 observed conversions and a study budget of about us$5,000. most indian smb accounts won't qualify, so run a geo holdout instead.

those thresholds, and the need for at least one lift-compatible conversion action, are as reported by search engine roundtable and in our pillar. google's own help page still says conversion lift isn't available to every account, and results near the minimums may only be directional (google ads help). search lift reporting arrived in google ads api v26 on 14 october 2026 as read-only metrics, with studies still created in google ads, as reported by ppc land.

for marut drones we ran meta and google together across 13 states, and the mix took ₹25 lakh to ₹8.7 crore. we don't split that by channel; a state-level holdout is how you'd test each one's share.

your 30-day measurement rollout

spend the first month on measurement before changing bids. week one audits actions, week two fixes the page and enhanced conversions, week three starts crm imports, and week four moves bidding to the imported stage. nothing gets judged on its first week of data.

  • days 1 to 7: list every conversion action; remove duplicates; set form and call actions to secondary-ready; set counting to one for leads; set imported actions to 90-day windows.
  • days 8 to 14: switch on enhanced conversions; store gclid, gbraid and wbraid in the crm; add the consent line; run the qa checklist above.
  • days 15 to 21: connect data manager; upload qualified, site visit and sale stages daily; reconcile counts with the crm.
  • days 22 to 30: make the deepest stage with enough volume primary; pick a strategy from the decision table; plan a geo holdout, or conversion lift if you qualify.
  • every month after: report cost per qualified lead and cost per sale (why we don't send 47-slide reports).

who wrote this, how and why

who: puneetraj chavan, founder of rapchik media, with 8+ years running performance marketing and automation for 30+ brands across india and the us.

how: definitions, limits and dates come from google ads help and google's developer documentation, with trade press where google's page wasn't available, all checked on 30 october 2026. platform-reported figures were not independently audited. client results come from rapchik case studies; the cost table is illustrative.

why: most indian accounts we audit have a bidding problem that is really a counting problem, and fixing what google counts beats any bid tweak.
