your whatsapp bill has three layers: meta's per-message rate, your provider's cut and 18% gst. most businesses only compare the first. here is how to price all three, set up without delays and pick a provider you can leave.

  • meta charges per delivered message by category. marketing is the expensive one; utility and authentication messages cost about a seventh as much (meta pricing docs).
  • providers earn in two ways: a monthly platform fee with messages at or near meta's rate, or a markup on every message. third-party comparisons in october 2026 put marketing rates between about ₹0.95 and ₹1.09 per message depending on the provider.
  • setup needs a verified meta business portfolio, a phone number that is not on the whatsapp app, an approved display name and a payment method.
  • new accounts can start conversations with only 250 new customers a day until quality and volume prove out (meta messaging limits).

this page is part of our whatsapp business api guide for india. that guide explains why whatsapp now bills like a meter and the five-layer system that turns chats into sales. here we go deeper on the money, the setup and the provider choice.

what does the whatsapp business api cost in india?

you pay meta a fixed rate for every template message it delivers, priced by category: about ₹0.8631 for marketing, ₹0.115 for utility and ₹0.115 for authentication, before 18% gst. messages customers send you are free, and the first 1,000 service replies per number each month are free. on top of that sits whatever your provider charges.

message typewhat it is forindia rate before gstnotes
marketing templateoffers, launches, re-engagementabout ₹0.8631no volume discount

rates are as published by meta and reported on indian provider rate cards, checked 18 october 2026 (meta pricing docs, chatmaxima india rate card). chatmaxima also reports that utility and authentication discounts only start at very large monthly volumes, so most indian smbs pay the standard rate.

whatsapp marketing message cost

a marketing template costs about ₹0.8631 before gst, or roughly ₹1.02 once 18% gst is added. it covers any template meant to sell: a festive offer, a restock alert, a cart reminder. there is no volume discount, and at about seven times the utility rate this is the line that decides most bills. sending fewer, better-targeted marketing messages is the biggest saving; our whatsapp marketing guide covers broadcasts, delivery caps and ads that start chats.

whatsapp utility message cost

a utility template costs about ₹0.115 before gst, roughly 13.6 paise after it. utility means a message the customer expects because of something they did: an order confirmation, a shipping update, a booking reminder, a payment receipt. the category matters more than the rate. meta can move a "utility" template into marketing if it carries promotional wording, which makes that message about seven times more expensive (template category rules). keep order updates and reminders strictly transactional.

how gst changes whatsapp api pricing in india

meta's india rates exclude tax, and 18% gst applies to both meta's charge and the platform fee. multiply every line by 1.18 before comparing a provider quote with your budget.

how do whatsapp business api providers in india charge?

indian providers charge in one of two ways: a monthly platform fee with messages passed through close to meta's rate, or a lower plan price with a markup on every message. the second looks cheaper on the pricing page and often costs more at volume. always ask for the landed rupee cost per message, including gst.

provider (as reported)platform feemarketing message ratesource
interaktabout ₹2,799 to ₹3,799 a monthabout ₹0.95 to ₹0.97jee designs comparison
aisensyfree base, paid plans about ₹1,500 to ₹3,200 a monthabout ₹1.09jee designs comparison
watiplans from about ₹4,999 a monthnot published on its pricing page; estimated about ₹0.99codingclave comparison

these are third-party figures from october 2026, not quotes. prices change often, so confirm with each provider before you sign.

here is how the gap adds up. as an illustrative example, take 20,000 marketing messages a month:

at meta's rate (₹0.8631)at ₹1.09 per message
message cost₹17,262₹21,800
with 18% gst≈ ₹20,369≈ ₹25,724
difference a year≈ ₹64,260 more

that difference can be larger than the platform fee you were trying to save. ask every provider the same three questions:

  • what is my landed cost per marketing, utility and service message, including gst?
  • is the whatsapp business account created under my own meta business portfolio, so i keep the number and templates if i leave?
  • does it connect natively to my crm, or only through exports and webhooks?

how do you get the whatsapp business api?

verify your meta business portfolio with documents that match your legal name, pick a phone number that is not active on the whatsapp app, set a display name that matches your brand, add a payment method, then create your first templates. a clean setup can be live in a few days; mismatched documents are the usual cause of delays.

  • verify your business. meta asks for a legal-name document (such as a gst certificate or certificate of incorporation) and proof of address or phone, such as a utility bill or bank statement. help centres report that rejections usually come from inconsistent details between the documents and the portfolio (respond.io help centre).
  • choose the number. it cannot be active on the whatsapp app at the same time. moving a number from the app means losing that app's chat history.
  • set the display name. it must clearly relate to your business, usually your legal or brand name as shown on your website. generic names such as "customer service" get rejected.
  • add a payment method. since the october 2026 change, service replies beyond the free 1,000 are billed, so the account needs a way to pay.
  • create templates. write three utility templates (confirmation, reminder, update) and one or two marketing templates, and check which category meta assigns each.
  • expect a ramp. messaging limits are set for your whole business portfolio and start at 250 new customers a day. meta raises them automatically when your messages are high quality and you use at least half your limit (meta messaging limits). chats that customers start do not count against this cap.

whatsapp business api pricing: what does a typical month cost?

as an illustrative example, an indian smb sending 4,000 marketing messages, 6,000 utility messages and 3,000 service replies a month pays meta about ₹4,372 before gst. add an assumed ₹3,000 platform fee and 18% gst and the landed bill is about ₹8,699 a month, with marketing making up most of the meta charge.

think of a lead-driven business with a few broadcasts, booking updates and customer replies.

line (illustrative example)volumerate before gstcost
marketing templates4,000₹0.8631₹3,452.40
utility templates6,000₹0.115₹690.00
service replies3,000 (first 1,000 free)₹0.115 on 2,000₹230.00
meta charges₹4,372.40
platform fee (assumed)₹3,000.00
subtotal₹7,372.40
gst at 18%₹1,327.03
landed monthly bill≈ ₹8,699

marketing is about 30% of the messages but 79% of what meta charges. the platform fee is a large share at this volume, so a markup plan can win here and lose once marketing volume doubles. rerun it with your own numbers.

how can you cut your whatsapp bill?

the biggest savings come from sending fewer marketing templates, not from haggling over rates. keep transactional messages strictly utility, reply inside the service window instead of sending templates, use click-to-whatsapp ads so conversations open a 72-hour free window, and automate first replies so leads never go cold and need a paid follow-up.

  • recategorise honestly. if 1,000 of the 4,000 marketing messages above were really appointment reminders, sending them as clean utility templates saves about ₹748 before gst, roughly ₹883 a month after it.
  • use the free entry point. when a customer messages you from a click-to-whatsapp ad or a facebook page button on their phone and you reply within 24 hours, meta makes every message free for the next 72 hours, templates included (meta pricing docs). respond.io reports that meta is extending this window to 7 days, so check meta's pricing page for the current length. this is why we pair whatsapp with paid social in our meta ads strategy.
  • reply in the window. a reply within 24 hours of the customer's last message uses the 1,000 free service messages; a template the next day is billed.
  • automate the first touch. an automated first reply answers inside the window every time, which is the core idea in our guide to ai automation for business in india.

in our work, a whatsapp retention flow helped a food-tech client cut churn by 22%. flows like that run on utility and service messages, not repeated blasts, which keeps them cheap.

what changed on 1 october 2026 for service messages?

from 1 october 2026, meta started charging for service replies and for utility templates sent inside the 24-hour customer service window, both of which were free before. each business phone number now gets its first 1,000 service messages a month free, and anything beyond that is billed at the utility rate.

a support-heavy account now pays once it passes 1,000 replies per number, as reported by sinch. provider-hosted accounts may also need a prepaid balance to keep replying, as reported by respond.io.

  • check whether each number will cross 1,000 replies, and top up any prepaid wallet.
  • answer repeat questions (price, timings, location) in one automated reply instead of five.

green tick, meta verified and meta one: what do you need?

you do not need a green tick to use the whatsapp business api. the green tick (official business account badge) is free but granted by meta based on how notable the brand is. meta's paid verification now sits inside meta one business plans, which started at ₹639 a month at the india launch.

  • green tick. guides agree it is free and depends on notability, such as independent press coverage and a recognisable brand, not on company size or spend (myoperator guide).
  • meta one. launched in india in september 2026 with paid business tiers. the entry tier, priced at ₹639 a month, replaced the old meta verified subscription (business today).
  • what matters more. a badge helps trust, but a fast reply and a clear display name do more for conversions than a tick.

whatsapp business app vs api: when should you switch?

stay on the free app while one or two people can reply from a phone. switch to the api when several people need one number, when you want chatbots or crm sync, when you run click-to-whatsapp ads at volume, or when leads wait because nobody is free. a waiting lead is the clearest sign.

speed is the reason. in harvard business review's audit of 2,241 firms, those that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times more likely to qualify it than those that waited longer (hbr, 2011). when we moved sports for life onto an automated whatsapp first reply, first response became five times faster with zero manual first-touch (how we built it). the app cannot do that; the api can.

pricing and setup mistakes to avoid

the costly mistakes are comparing plan prices instead of landed message costs, letting the provider own the account, putting promotional lines in utility templates and starting with broadcast blasts on a brand-new number. each one either raises the bill or slows the account down.

  • comparing monthly plan prices instead of the rupee cost per message at your real volume.
  • letting the provider register the account under its portfolio.
  • adding discount codes or upsells to order updates, which turns them into marketing messages.
  • blasting a bought list from a new number, which hurts quality and stalls your messaging limit.
  • forgetting gst when budgeting, which adds 18% to every line.

quick answers: other whatsapp api pricing questions

short answers to the follow-ups we get most: the api is not free but customer messages are, you can pay meta directly on the cloud api, you are billed for delivered messages, and the cheapest plan is rarely the cheapest bill. each answer below links back to the source.

is the whatsapp business api free?

no. messages customers send you are free, the first 1,000 service replies per number each month are free, and conversations from click-to-whatsapp ads open a free entry point window. every other template and reply is billed (meta pricing docs).

can i pay meta directly without a provider?

yes, on meta's cloud api you can be billed by meta directly through the payment method on your business manager account, as reported by respond.io. you still need an inbox, templates and automations, which is what providers sell.

do i pay for messages that never arrive?

meta charges per delivered message, so undelivered templates are not billed by meta. a provider's markup model may count differently, so check its terms.
